CHIPLEY, Florida — A Florida man has been sentenced to death for his role in the death of a retired game warden. The death sentence is the first in a Washington County courtroom in modern judicial history.

The Panama City News Herald (http://bit.ly/1bOOkd2 ) reports Zachary Taylor Wood was sentenced Tuesday. A jury recommended death for Wood in February after finding him guilty of first-degree murder and robbery in the death of 66-year-old James "Coon" Shores. Shores was shot to death execution-style on his property in April 2014 after he found Wood and Dillon Rafsky on his family land after a burglary. Prosecutors said the men beat, bound and shot Shores before attempting to set him on fire.

Wood's family says he was a victim and in an abusive romantic relationship with Rafsky.
