Poland charges man with membership in armed terror group active in Syria

WARSAW, Poland — A prosecutor in Poland says a 23-year-old Pole has been charged on suspicion of participation in an armed group that has terrorist goals and is active in Syria.

The man, identified only as Dawid L. was taken into custody Sunday after being extradited from Norway, where he has lived for some years.

Jaroslaw Szubert, spokesman for the prosecutors in the city of Lodz, said Monday that between January 2014 and April 2015 the man took part in training, to some degree in war activity and traveled secretly between Syria, Turkey, Norway and Poland. The group is not linked to Islamic State, Szubert said.

If convicted, the man could face up to eight years in prison. He refused to testify.

Szubert said further arrests in the case are possible.
