CHESTERFIELD, Virginia — Investigators are still looking for evidence to determine who fired the weapon that claimed the life of a 7-year-old Chesterfield County boy almost two years ago.

Multiple media outlets report Brendon Mackey was struck by a stray bullet on July 4, 2013 as he walked with his father to a fireworks display at Swift Creek Reservoir. Mackey died the next day.

Police, who believe the shooting was an accident and the result of celebratory gunfire, say the shot was fired within a 7,100-foot radius of the boy.

In the days after Mackey's death, police went door-to-door, canvassing neighborhoods within a 2-mile radius of where Mackey was shot. Several guns were tested to see if they matched the shell from that fatal shot, but none did.
