Discovery of skeletal remains ends month-long search for missing 81-year-old California woman

FRESNO, California — Authorities say they've found skeletal remains believed to be those of an 81-year-old Fresno woman missing for a month.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Monday that Zillabell "Jane" Friesen's remains were found near her SUV on a remote dirt road some 60 miles from home.

Friesen was last seen early on July 21, saying she would be home in time to make dinner.

Dyer says that early in the investigation detectives have found no signs of foul play.

He says Friesen may have gone for a walk and passed out; animals may have consumed her body.

Her daughter, Melaney Shaum, says her mother was adventurous and probably turned down the road to explore.

Investigators await autopsy and DNA tests to confirm the identity and possibly further explain what happened.
