CARMEL, New York — A Putnam County man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping a woman while her 5-year-old son was in another room.

District Attorney Adam Levy (LEE'-vee) announced Monday that Victor Cruz Garcia of Brewster also will have 20 years of post-release supervision and must register as a sex offender.

He was convicted on March 13 for the vicious attack, which occurred on Nov. 1, 2013.

When the victim finally broke free, the enraged defendant threatened to harm her and her family if she contacted police.

He hurled objects at a door while she crouched behind it, comforting her terrified child and attempting to call 911. Kent police officers responded quickly.

Levy commended the victim for her "immense bravery" in helping law enforcers achieve the conviction.
