Equipment problems blamed for sewage spill of nearly 5,000 gallons into creek near Hope Mills

HOPE MILLS, North Carolina — Utility officials say an equipment malfunction caused a sewage spill into a creek outside Hope Mills.

The Fayetteville Observer reported (http://bit.ly/1iBC6J3) that the spill late Wednesday afternoon sent the sewage into Little Rockfish Creek.

The Fayetteville Public Works Commission said more than 4,600 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into the creek.

The utility said a pump system failed while contractors were working on a sewer line. The utility said the equipment has been repaired.

The utility said it notified the North Carolina Division of Water Resources.
