CUMBERLAND, Maryland — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says it's making progress on a new, off-road vehicle trail in far western Maryland.
Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto tells the Cumberland Times-News (http://bit.ly/1korZak ) he expects the 14-mile trail in the Savage River State Forest to open next spring or summer.
He says the agency is reviewing an architect's design before sending it to a stakeholders group that includes off-road riders.
The newspaper reported in its Thursday edition that the project is a year behind the initial schedule.
The agency proposed the trail after closing two off-road vehicle trails in western Maryland and one on the Eastern Shore in 2011 to curb environmental damage.
Peditto says the new trail will run mainly on existing roads.
