PHOENIX — The mother of an Arizona woman charged with murder in her son's 1989 death has died in Germany.

Michael Kimerer, an attorney for Debra Milke, says his client's mother died Saturday at a hospital where she was being treated for cancer.

Last week, a judge had denied Milke's request for permission to travel to Germany to visit her sick mother.

Milke faces a Feb. 2 retrial in the death of her 4-year-old son Christopher.

She is now free on bond after an appeals court threw out her earlier conviction in the case.

The case against her rested largely on her purported confession, which a now-retired detective didn't record. His credibility has been called into question.

Milke disputes that she confessed to the crime and maintains that she's innocent.
