PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — A former New England mob boss is back on Federal Hill after spending more than four years in prison for extorting payments in Providence strip clubs.

A Bureau of Prisons spokesman says Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchio checked into a halfway house on Tuesday after leaving a low-security prison in North Carolina. He is now living in his old apartment on Atwells Avenue on home confinement.

The 87-year-old Manocchio pleaded guilty in 2012 to charges that he helped shake down strip clubs for protection money. He was sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

Steven O'Donnell, head of the Rhode Island State Police, says the former boss of the Patriarca crime family is well known among law enforcement. He says Manocchio will wear an electronic monitoring device until his sentence expires.
