NORTH HALEDON, New Jersey — A northern New Jersey mayor who used a town generator to power his ice cream shop during Superstorm Sandy has won re-election.

The Record ( ) reports North Haledon Mayor Randy George turned away a challenge on Tuesday. George has been mayor for 16 years.

North Haledon voters last year elected two Democrats to the borough council for the first time since 1999. They attributed their narrow victory to George using the generator.

The Passaic County community's police chief also took a generator to his home where his 86-year-old mother was staying during Sandy.
