NORFOLK, Virginia — A report issued by Oceana concludes the development of wind turbines off Virginia's coast would create thousands of jobs.
The oceans advocacy group issued a report Wednesday that compares offshore wind development vs. drilling for oil and gas in Atlantic waters. Oceana said the economic analysis found that wind development would produce twice the number of jobs and energy as oil and gas drilling.
The report also concludes that offshore oil and gas development would put at risk more than 1 million jobs and economies tied to fishing, tourism and recreation.
In Virginia, the Oceana report found that offshore wind development would create about 15,000 jobs — 5,000 more than oil and gas development.
Dominion Virginia Power was the successful bidder to develop a vast ocean tract for wind development.
