EDWARDSVILLE, Illinois — An Alton man has been ordered to spend more than three decades in prison for sexually assaulting a girl.

Thirty-four-year-old Garrett Rottau was sentenced Thursday in Madison County to 32 years in prison. That's eight years for each count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Rottau was convicted in September.

The (Alton) Telegraph (http://bit.ly/1GyxgTr) reports that the victim was 10 when the attacks spanning roughly a year began in 2007. She told the judge Thursday the assaults drove her to the brink of suicide.

Nine of Rottau's friends and family members insisted in court that Rottau was a good, hard-working man.
