BOWIE, Maryland — Police say a Washington, D.C., man who died in a car fire on a Maryland golf course was trying to free the vehicle from the mud.

WRC-TV (http://bit.ly/1OxXblv) reports 70-year-old Frank Andrew Bartee of northeast Washington became stuck in the mud on a golf course in Prince George's County early Sunday. Police say a groundskeeper at the Enterprise Golf Course in Bowie called about the burning car around 5 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities say Bartee's car engine caught fire as he worked to free the car. He suffered severe burns and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are not sure why Bartee drove onto the course.
