Somerville mayor opposed to plan for bridge linking his city to Everett casino

SOMERVILLE, Massachusetts — The mayor of Somerville vows to fight a proposed footbridge that would span the Mystic River and link his city to the Wynn casino being built on the other side in Everett.

The bridge would make it easier for people shopping at Assembly Row and using the Assembly MBTA station to get to the $1.7 billion casino.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, who has long opposed the casino, tells The Boston Globe (http://bit.ly/1H0bmgs ) a footbridge "would benefit Steve Wynn and Steve Wynn only."

The idea of a footbridge in the area has been around for a decade.

Wynn Resorts revived the idea last summer and committed $250,000 for a study.

Wynn's development director calls a bridge "common sense." Proponents say it would also make it easier for employees to get to work.
