Woman convicted of killing 5 in Arkansas, including her 3 children, dies in prison infirmary

NEWPORT, Arkansas — A woman convicted of killing five people in northwest Arkansas in 1974 — including her three children — has died in a state prison infirmary.

A spokeswoman for the state prison system told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1IGZsCa ) that 79-year-old Shirley Curry died Monday of natural causes.

Curry was serving life in prison without parole for the July 20, 1974, shooting deaths of her 17-year-old daughter, 14- and 11-year-old sons, her ex-husband and her ex-husband's sister. She also shot and wounded her sister's ex-husband while her ex-husband's wife escaped the attack.

The shootings occurred in Springdale, Lowell and Farmington and came the day after custody of the three children were awarded to Curry's ex-husband.
