UMATILLA, Oregon — State authorities say a 70-year-old inmate at the Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Eastern Oregon has died in the infirmary, and an investigation has begun.

The inmate was identified as George Phillip Murphy Jr., convicted in Coos County of unlawful sexual penetration.

He was in the infirmary and was found unresponsive Thursday evening. He'd been in custody since 2004 and could have been released as early as February 2017.

The State Police conduct an investigation whenever an inmate dies unexpectedly.
