LITTLE TRAVERSE TOWNSHIP, Michigan — Authorities say a 58-year-old suburban Detroit pilot has died in a small plane crash near an airport in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula.

The Petoskey News-Review reports the plane was discovered around 7:30 a.m. Monday in Emmet County's Little Traverse Township. MLive.com says the person noticed a large tree limb down and found the pilot, Arthur A. Green III of Farmington Hills.

The sheriff's department says the plane crashed about 11 p.m. Sunday approaching the airport for Harbor Springs, about 55 miles northeast of Traverse City. Authorities say Green was the only person aboard.

Green, a first lieutenant with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' Law Enforcement Division, was going to a meeting in a private plane. He had been a Detroit police officer before joining the DNR in 1996.
