RALEIGH, North Carolina — Republican Party officials have selected a candidate to replace Rep. Jim Fulghum in a state Senate race in parts of Wake County in November.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported (http://bit.ly/1yB0Jbb) that the Senate District 15 Republican Party executive committee on Thursday chose John M. Alexander Jr. to replace Fulghum.

He won the Republican nomination in the May primary. But Fulghum recently announced he is withdrawing because he has cancer.

Alexander will be the GOP candidate for the seat of Sen. Neal Hunt, who is retiring. Alexander ran for the Senate in 2008 and lost to Sen. Josh Stein, a Raleigh Democrat. Alexander runs Capital International Trucks.

He faces former state transportation secretary and former Raleigh mayor Tom Bradshaw in the November election.
