SAN DIEGO — Right-hander Buddy Carlyle has been designated for assignment by the New York Mets, who plan to activate left-hander Jon Niese from the 15-day disabled list to start Monday night in Seattle against the Mariners.
Niese was put on the 15-day disabled list on July 6, a move retroactive to a day earlier, after the Mets detected a drop-off in the crispness of some of his pitches.
Niese missed six weeks last season with a partial tear in his rotator cuff and was sidelined this spring training with shoulder weakness.
Carlyle is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in five relief appearances and seven innings. He appeared in three games this month.
New York announced the move Sunday and has 10 days to trade Carlyle, ask release waivers or send him outright to the minors.
