SEVILLE, Ohio — An 81-year-old pilot remains in critical condition after a single-engine plane crash over the weekend.
The State Highway Patrol says 81-year-old Robert Syme was attempting to land at a small airport in Westfield Township in Medina County Saturday evening when the landing gear became stuck in the mud, causing the plane to overturn on a grass runway.
The patrol says Syme was taken to an Akron hospital with severe injuries and remains in a critical care unit. He was the only occupant on the plane.
Troopers say the official cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting a follow-up inspection and investigation.
