SAN ANTONIO — The City Council has voted to revoke $32 million it had allocated for a streetcar system.

The council voted 7-2 Thursday to pull the funding after Mayor Ivy Taylor said on Monday that any streetcar or rail plans should be put before voters. Bexar (bayr) County Judge Nelson Wolff also said he had withdrawn his support for the VIA (VEE'-uh) Metropolitan Transit plan.

VIA has funding to build part of a nearly 6-mile downtown system projected to open in 2017. VIA and the Texas Department of Transportation each pledged $92 million.

However, an anti-streetcar coalition has gathered signatures for a charter amendment against the proposal.
