KENTWOOD, Michigan — The American Red Cross of West Michigan plans to distribute cleanup kits to people whose homes were damaged by recent severe weather in the state.
Volunteers in Kentwood plan to hand out kits until 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Red Cross shelter at the Kentwood Activities Center. Kits include mops, scrub brushes, shovels, cleaning chemicals and other items. Tarps also will be available if needed.
A severe thunderstorm late Sunday spawned a tornado with winds reaching the 100-110 mph range in Kent County, causing significant damage to homes in western Michigan, and damage was reported elsewhere.
On Wednesday, the National Weather Service confirmed that a weaker tornado touched down near Ionia early Monday. Some damage was reported to trees, crops and some area farm buildings.
