WILMINGTON, North Carolina — A Coast Guard report concludes the captain of a Bald Head Island ferry was likely daydreaming when the vessel ran aground in the Cape Fear River last year, injuring 13 passengers and a crew member.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports ( the ferry with 30 passengers aboard was outside the main channel and hit a sandbar Dec. 17.

The report concludes the captain was lost in thought or daydreaming because he could not explain to investigators what happened. The ferry hit the sandbar at nearly 22 mph and the captain did not try to change course or slow down.

The report said that the captain had had to euthanize the dog that was his longtime pet the previous day and had been prescribed medicine to deal with the loss.
