MEDIA, Pennsylvania — A pediatrician has been sentenced to 22½ to 52 years in prison for a shooting that wounded her former domestic partner and narrowly missed their 11-year-old son.

Lauren Daly, 42, shot the 49-year-old woman through a car windshield on Memorial Day last year outside Daly's home near Media, authorities said. The boy, who was sitting in the passenger seat, wasn't injured. Investigators said the couple had ended their relationship several years earlier but shared custody of the boy and a 9-year-old girl.

The victim, Margaret Grover, told Judge Michael Coll that she was terrified of another attack if Daly ever got out of prison, The Delaware County Daily Times (http://bit.ly/1qhsDIr ) reported. She and Assistant District Attorney Mary Mann said Daly had a meticulous plan to try to disrupt Grover's life and gain sole custody of their young daughter.

Defense attorney Mike Malloy argued that his client fired in self-defense, saying the car was moving toward her at the time.

The judge said there was no physical evidence to support that contention.

"And it's absurd to think that if that was being attempted, that shooting through the windshield of the car would prevent that from actually happening," Coll said.

Malloy read a letter from a longtime friend that described the defendant as warm, kind and devoted to children.

"She has dedicated her entire adult to life to making her little part of the world a better place for young people, and she has helped countless families along the way," the letter said.

But Lisa Kane Brown, a court-appointed guardian who said the children are now doing "unbelievably well," said six deputies were needed to restrain Daly at one hearing.

"This defendant puts on one face for the world and then is an entirely separate person when behind closed doors," Mann said. "I would submit to your honor that the person behind closed doors is who she really is."
