FORT SMITH, Arkansas — A Fort Smith man was sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to two counts of capital murder in the death of his pregnant girlfriend.

The Southwest Times Record reported ( ) that 21-year-old Douglas David True pleaded guilty Wednesday in Sebastian County Circuit Court. He was accused of beating 22-year-old Briana Nicole Butler unconscious and then stabbing her nearly a dozen times last July 20.

True was arrested after calling police to turn himself in. According to investigators, True said he and Butler argued and then fought. He said he was intoxicated and couldn't remember what happened after that.

Prosecutor Dan Shue said a gag order remains in place and that he couldn't discuss the negotiations for a plea bargain. Butler's father said he approved the deal.
