GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — A Carbondale restaurant owner accused of fatally shooting a man his stepdaughter was living with has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reports ( ) 40-year-old Fredy Cabrera entered his plea Friday for the July 31, 2013, death of 21-year-old Douglas Menjivar. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop a first-degree murder charge that carried a possible sentence of life in prison.

Cabrera will likely be sentenced to between 16 and 48 years in prison during a hearing Oct. 1.

Investigators say he was angry his 18-year-old stepdaughter was in a relationship with Menjivar, who had worked for Cabrera at his restaurant. Friday's deal was the same one Cabrera rejected at a hearing Tuesday after he initially said he would accept.
