ASHEVILLE, North Carolina — The operator of Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway has been awarded a contract to operate for another 10 years.
Bruce O'Connell told the Asheville Citizen-Times (http://avlne.ws/1lPAiw5) he plans to make improvements to the inn now that he has won the contract again.
O'Connell's family company has operated the inn since 1978.
O'Connell said he plans to upgrade the 51 rooms and make improvements at the restaurant, country store, gift shop and employee housing.
He said he had been waiting on the improvements until he learned whether he would get a contact renewal.
Larger corporations have increasingly won contracts to operate concessions in National Park Service facilities.
Connell and the inn staff kept it open after a National Park Service deadline to close during the government shutdown last October, then were forced to close when parkway staffers blocked the entrances.
They removed barriers after O'Connell sued.
O'Connell said he has not been given details of the contract.
