MARKSVILLE, Louisiana — State police have arrested two Opelousas men accused of trying to funnel drugs into the Avoyelles Correctional Center through work-release inmates.
Officials at the state-run facility in Cottonport had contacted troopers on Friday about the attempt to get drugs and drug paraphernalia inside.
In a news release, Master Trooper Scott Moreau said officers arrested 31-year-old Paul Lewis and 28-year-old Michael Edwards Jr. on Tuesday.
When the pair was arrested Tuesday, Moreau said they had more than 50 bundles of synthetic marijuana and more than 20 packages of cigarette paper.
Lewis and Edwards face charges with possession of a controlled dangerous substance I with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and conspiracy to introduce contraband into a correctional facility.
Online jail records do not list an attorney for the men.
