BURBANK, Illinois — At least two school districts called off classes after up to 5 ½ inches of rain fell in parts of Chicago's southwest suburbs. Basements and yards were flooded, forcing some people to get around in row boats and kayaks.
The suburb of Burbank was particularly hard-hit overnight Thursday and into Friday. Burbank School District 111 called off classes Friday. Reavis Township High School closed for the day, too.
The National Weather service says as much as 5 ½ inches of rain fell in some areas.
Residents were complaining of sewer backups and flooded basements.
The standing water disrupted morning commutes and forced roadway shutdowns. The Chicago Transit Authority suspended trains along a portion of the Blue Line between the city and O'Hare International Airport.
