Documents: Driver accused in fatal hit-and-run in Phoenix was drinking at a bar before crash

PHOENIX — Court documents allege that a driver accused in a fatal hit-and-run in north Phoenix was drinking at a bar before the accident.

Bond was set at $750,000 at Friday's initial court appearance for 23-year-old Jeofrey Mutinda Kavu.

He was arrested Thursday on suspicion of manslaughter, endangerment and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Kavu doesn't have a lawyer yet.

Investigators say impairment is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Police later found a bar receipt with Kavu's name on it and a 1:05 a.m. Thursday time stamp.

They say a 33-year-old woman pushing a shopping cart in a bike lane was fatally struck shortly before 2 a.m.

Police say the vehicle involved was found at a nearby apartment complex and Kavu still smelled of alcohol when interviewed.
