BISMARCK, North Dakota — Authorities say a Parshall man has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison for sex abuse.

U.S. Attorney Tim Purdon says 24-year-old Richard G. Staples pleaded guilty to sexually abusing an individual incapable of consenting to sexual activity. He was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland.

Purdon says the crime occurred in May 2013 on the Fort Berthold reservation.

Staples is required to register as a sex offender once he's released from prison.
