BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — Public school students are taking more than 19,000 classes through Louisiana's Course Choice program, which offers outside courses to high school and middle school students.

Course Choice lets students take online course offerings, academic courses and skills training taught by colleges, private organizations or other public schools. These are classes that aren't available at the students' schools.

The state education department announced Wednesday that students are enrolled in 19,068 classes through Course Choice this school year. That's up from 2,362 classes taken last year when Course Choice was a pilot program.

More than 13,000 of the classes are "dual enrollment" courses offered at the state's university, community and technical college campuses.

Lawmakers and the state education board budgeted $7.5 million for the program this year.
