Ex-Denver Sheriff Department chief loses appeal of his firing

DENVER — A former Denver Sheriff Department chief who was fired for allegedly giving preferential treatment to a department captain who faced criminal charges has lost his appeal to be reinstated.

The Denver Post reports (http://dpo.st/1QFbIvL ) a Career Service hearing officer upheld Frank Gale's termination Monday, saying Gale blamed other officers for his actions.

Gale was fired in January after he was accused of giving preferential treatment to a captain who had been arrested in a domestic violence case, which was later dismissed.

Investigators say the captain was allowed to wear her civilian clothes to her arraignment and was allowed to leave through the courthouse's front doors. Both are violations of policy.

Gale said he hadn't been handling the captain's case and it wasn't his decision to allow the violations to occur.
