BOSTON — Board members of the Market Basket grocery store chain are meeting behind closed doors to discuss the future of the beleaguered company as thousands of employees and customers protest the firing of their popular chief executive.

The workers' revolt has severely depleted store shelves and prompted customers to shop at competitors' stores.

By midday Friday, the board meeting was still ongoing and there was no immediate word from the board.

Employees are demanding the reinstatement of CEO Arthur T. Demoulas, who was fired last month by a board controlled by his cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas.

Arthur T. Demoulas has offered to buy out his cousin. Arthur S. Demoulas told WHDH-TV Friday that he hasn't yet seen his cousin's offer and doesn't know if it will be accepted.
