BOSTON — The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts is officially consecrating its new bishop.

The consecration ceremony for the Rev. Alan Gates is scheduled for Saturday morning at Boston University's Agganis Arena.

Gates, former rector of St. Paul's Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, takes over from M. Thomas Shaw, who retired after 20 years as bishop.

More than 4,000 guests, including 28 bishops of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion, are expected to attend.

The ceremony is free but tickets are required.

Gates, wo was elected in April, will lead the diocese with 185 congregations in the eastern part of Massachusetts.
