Western Massachusetts man pleads not guilty to setting woman's apartment on fire

PITTSFIELD, Massachusetts — A man police allege broke into a woman's apartment and set it on fire has pleaded not guilty.

The Berkshire Eagle (http://bit.ly/1PC26jE ) reports that Timothy LaFave was held without bail at his arraignment Tuesday.

Authorities say he broke into the woman's North Adams home Oct. 3 while she and her daughter were out.

He allegedly ripped down the smoke detectors and started a fire in a bedroom. Authorities say nine adults and 13 children were at home in other apartments in the building at the time.

He denied setting the fire.

LaFave is charged with breaking and entering, arson of a dwelling house and other offenses. He's due back in court Jan. 5.
