AKRON, Ohio — A 47-year-old northeast Ohio man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after authorities said he stole vases and urns from gravesites.
News outlets report that Gregory Wade of suburban Akron pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property. Summit County Common Pleas Judge Alison McCarty also Friday sentenced him to pay restitution to families.
Wade was accused of stealing dozens of bronze items from Hillside Memorial Cemetery gravesites and selling them for scrap metal.
One man told the judge a vase was stolen from the grave of his infant son who died in 1970. He was among several family members the judge heard from.
She commented that the law sometimes doesn't adequate address "the emotional effects" of a crime.
A phone number listed to Wade repeatedly rang busy Saturday.
