Jury recommends 3rd death sentence for man on death row; still awaiting trial for 5th killing

TAMPA, Florida — Jurors have recommended a third death sentence for a Tampa Bay area man already on death row for killing two police officers.

A Hillsborough County jury voted 10-2 in favor of executing Dontae Morris Thursday, a day after convicting him of first-degree murder. A judge will make the final sentencing decision. A status hearing is set for Sept. 4.

Authorities say Morris fatally shot 20-year-old Derek Anderson on May 18, 2010, after learning the other man had been selling marijuana in his territory.

Morris previously received a life sentence for killing Rodney Jones outside a night club on May 31, 2010. Morris received two death sentences for the June 29, 2010, murders of Tampa police Officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab.

Morris is still awaiting trial for the June 8, 2010, slaying of Harold Wright.
