PHOENIX — Bond is set at $50,000 for a Surprise man who allegedly stole a car with two children inside and fled from police before crashing.

Authorities say 35-year-old Stewart Galligan is being held on suspicion of more than a dozen felony charges including kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, car theft, drug possession and child endangerment.

During a traffic stop Wednesday by Avondale police, Galligan allegedly pushed his girlfriend out of the driver's seat and took control of the car.

He hit the gas and took off with his girlfriend's two children — ages 3 and 5 —still in the car.

Police say Galligan rammed the car through a chain link fence. The children weren't hurt and Galligan was arrested.

Authorities believe Galligan was smoking methamphetamine before the traffic stop.
