DEARBORN, Michigan — A southeastern Michigan human services agency has opened registration for its first overseas health conference focusing on medical issues and innovations for Arabs.

Dearborn-based ACCESS says about 500 health and governmental officials from 22 countries are expected to attend the 7th International Conference on Health Issues in Arab Communities. It's scheduled for March 1-7 in Muscat, Oman.

Organizers say Arab Americans have common risk factors and disease patterns but research is scarce. That's because Arabs aren't recognized as a minority in the United States and statistics are obscured within Census figures.

The conference aims to boost collaboration to improve mental health and chronic disease conditions among Arab patients.

ACCESS was founded as the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services.
