RALEIGH, North Carolina — Charlotte will have a new mayor later this year after incumbent Dan Clodfelter lost in a Democratic primary runoff to the former head of the Mecklenburg County commissioners.
Unofficial precinct results show Jennifer Roberts defeated Clodfelter on Tuesday, 54 percent to 46 percent. She will take on Republican Edwin Peacock in November. Clodfelter is a former state senator appointed mayor last year after Patrick Cannon resigned during a corruption scandal that ultimately led him to prison.
In other municipal elections Tuesday, Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane easily won a third two-year term, defeating Bob Weltzin by a 3-to-1 margin.
Fayetteville Mayor Nat Robertson and Durham Mayor Bill Bell both advanced to the general election Tuesday by finishing first in their primaries.
