ALBANY, New York — Opponents of a casino planned for New York's Finger Lakes have gathered at New York's state Capitol to urge gambling regulators to reject the project.
Speakers at Tuesday's protest of the Lago Resort and Casino called on the state's Gaming Commission to withhold a casino license from the facility in Tyre, arguing it will take business from a nearby tribal casino and racetrack "racino."
Lago was endorsed last year by a state casino location board but hasn't yet received its formal license. Construction has already begun, however, with work on the casino's foundation expected to start this week.
A Lago spokesman says Tuesday's protest was a cynical attempt by the owners of two existing gambling facilities to protect their monopoly.
