NORTHAMPTON, Massachusetts — A Chicopee police officer involved in a serious car crash in Belchertown last July will serve 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to drunken driving.

Paul Genest was sentenced Tuesday in Hampshire Superior Court to 2 ½ years in jail, but will serve 30 days with the remainder suspended for a five-year probationary period.

The 41-year-old Genest was also ordered to undergo counseling, refrain from alcohol and pay $10,000 in restitution.

Prosecutors say Genest's blood-alcohol contest was almost three times the legal limit to drive when his vehicle crossed the centerline on Route 21 and struck a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old woman. The woman broke a foot and suffered multiple lacerations.

Genest was suspended after his arrest but his lawyer says he hopes to rejoin the force.
