CRANSTON, Rhode Island — A Cranston police captain has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against local officials and the city alleging he was the target of a vendetta and harassment campaign by the former police chief.

Capt. Todd Patalano sued in U.S. District Court in Providence on Tuesday.

Patalano alleges former Chief Marco Palombo filed seven bogus disciplinary complaints against him, and other officers gave perjured testimony against him to help Palombo. Patalano also accuses Mayor Allan Fung of not doing anything to stop the harassment.

Patalano has previously alleged that Palombo thought his career was threatened by Patalano.

All the disciplinary cases against Patalano were eventually dropped.

Fung, a Republican candidate for governor, declined to comment on the lawsuit.

Palombo's lawyer says he believes a jury will find in Palombo's favor.
