BEAR, Delaware — New Castle County Police say a 16-year-old boy was shot as he ran from a car he had been in.

The shooting was reported about 6:30 p.m. Friday in Bear. Officers say a car pulled onto the side of the road at Penman Drive and Sandburg Place.

Authorities say the teenager ran away from the car but collapsed about 20 yards away when he was shot. The car then drove off.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports (http://delonline.us/1SYAcPn) that the youth was taken to Christiana Hospital, where police say he required surgery. Officers would not provide details on the nature of the boy's injuries.
