BARRE, Vermont — A former Vermont elementary school staffer has pleaded not guilty to embezzling thousands of dollars from a technology equipment fund she set up at the school in 1999.

Kay Marcelle retired from Waitsfield Elementary School in 2012 and closed the fund, which had about $9,000. In 2013, the superintendent of the Washington West Supervisory Union contacted police alleging that Marcelle had taken money from the fund.

The Times Argus reports (http://bit.ly/1G6Spng) questions about the fund, however, dated back to 2009, when the principal felt it wasn't meeting accounting standards. A prior principal said the fund had lost its tax-exempt status and should have been "banished."

The 60-year-old Marcelle told police there were records for the fund, but said she didn't recall where they were.
