COLUMBIA, South Carolina — The former executive director of an association of South Carolina criminal defense lawyers has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison for stealing nearly $200,000 from the organization.

The State newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1oCzq99 ) that a judge handed down that sentence Tuesday to 48-year-old Teresa Edmonds.

Edmonds turned herself in last year on two charges of breach of trust and pleaded guilty in May. Authorities say she took about $192,000 from the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, spending it on personal items including cellphones, dental work and cosmetic surgery.

Edmonds has said she didn't think the lawyers she worked for would want her sent to prison if she was ever found out. She has not been able to repay the money.
