BILLINGS, Montana — The ex-wife of a former Big Horn County sheriff has pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining more than $23,000 in Social Security benefits for her son.

The Billings Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1ASIUrE ) 41-year-old Caroline Dee Bighair pleaded guilty to Social Security fraud during a U.S. District Court hearing Tuesday. U.S. District Judge Susan Watters ordered Bighair to remain in custody until her June 17 sentencing.

Bighair acknowledged receiving more than $23,000 in Supplemental Security Income on behalf of her son from 2006 to 2010 by not reporting she was living with her husband and not reporting his salary.

The case came to light in 2010 when Lawrence Bighair gained custody of the boy, applied to be his representative payee and told a Social Security Administration employee that he had been in the household since his son's birth.
