Lafourche animal shelter close to some services, dog tested positive for bacterial disease

THIBODAUX, Louisiana — The Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter will close some of its services this week after a dog that had been kept there tested positive for a bacterial disease called leptospirosis.

Shelter Manager Hilary Knight tells The Daily Comet (http://bit.ly/1PJ3UWm) the shelter will be closed to the public until at least Thursday and will not take in new animals during that time except for those involved in bite and cruelty cases.

Knight says the closure will give the staff time to determine if other animals have been infected with the disease.

Knight said a dog came into the shelter on Sept. 8 and left 12 days later. During its time at the shelter, he says the dog showed signs of liver failure that staff members attributed to heartworms.
