GOSHEN, Indiana — An Indiana native is one of a dozen performers from around the world chosen to train and perform with the San Francisco Opera.

The Elkhart Truth reports (http://bit.ly/12nt4GG ) Matthew Stump of Goshen is one of 12 Adler fellows who will begin training with the opera Jan. 5.

Stump is the only bass-baritone singer in the group.

Stump currently is a master's student in operatic singing at the University of North Texas. He says he dabbled in musicals during high school but never considered pursuing opera until a teacher at Luther College in Iowa asked him to audition for the title role in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro."

The role has led to other performances, and now to San Francisco.
